Diane Beattie, a healthcare consultant from Canada, shared that GE's medical information exchange system for diagnostic imaging, installed in 54 hospitals in Southwestern Ontario has resulted in significant improvements in the delivery of care. Radiologist and Imaging Departments are reporting a 30% increase in productivity, resulting in increased access to care, reduced wait times and a 3% reduction in the number of exams. Diagnostic Imaging Benefits Evaluation Report, an independent study commissioned by Canada Health Infoway identified operating cost savings in the range of 13%.
Through a special program, patients with head trauma or other neurological complications can access the country’s top specialists regardless of location. Since January 2009, the use of this information exchange has reduced the need for high-risk travel, avoiding 425 patient transfers at an estimated system cost savings of $46M to the Province of Ontario.
